Life without Cancer

Everyone is affected by cancer and Össur UK want to help change that. On 23rd June 2017 we will be embarking on a 48 hour challenge which will test each and every member of team.

Why are we doing it?

Statistics show that 38.5% of people will be diagnosed with cancer at some stage, that’s almost 1 in 2 people and that figure is staggering. In 2014 there were 356,860 reported cases of cancer in the UK with a 50% survival rate. Of these cases 42% were preventable, hence the importance of research to stop cancer before it even starts. It is because of these stats and the impact which cancer has had on many of the people and the families of those working for Össur that we felt we needed to do something to help.

How will it work?

Starting at 7pm the team will be running 3 static bikes and a treadmill connected to a light which we aim to continuously power for 48 hours non-stop. Throughout the 48 hours the bikes will not stop running (apart from during a quick changeover) and will see over 1,000 miles clocked up, with the treadmill seeing a total of 200 miles run. In total we expect to clock up a total of 1,200 miles over the course of the weekend before we finish at 7pm on Sunday 25th June.

Who are we doing it for?

All the money raised will go to The Christie charity, an organisation who fund life-changing and life-saving work to support cancer patients. As the largest single site cancer centre in Europe they are dedicated to serve a population of over 3.2 million, with 26% of patients referred to them from across the UK. Named as one of the best hospitals providing opportunities for patients to take part in clinical research studies, they have over 550 active studies to help fight cancer. The Christie offer invaluable support to not only cancer patients but their families, because cancer affects everyone and as such everyone should have the support they need.
