Iceross characteristics

Comfort and performance start with Iceross®

Why silicone?

Iceross prosthetic interfaces are made exclusively from silicone, and for good reasons. Silicone is the only material that allows different levels of softness and strength to be incorporated into Iceross liner designs. Just as people need a choice of flexible or more supportive footwear for different activities, amputees need different qualities from their prosthetic liners.

Iceross Silicone under the microscopeFrom our softest silicone offering optimum comfort, right through to stiffer materials for high-active use, there is an Iceross prosthetic liner suitable for everyone. Silicone is also the ideal material that allows us to add selected supplements to the mix, such as Vaseline® and Aloe Vera, actively improving skin care and comfort.

Validated by decades of medical use, silicone is the only interface material available that is totally bio-inert - that means it doesn't react with the skin in any way. It's a very durable material and easy to clean. Add to that some 30 years of Ossur research and development and you know you have a prosthetic liner you can trust.

Silicone benefits:

  • Different levels of support/softness available
  • Bio-inert
  • Durable and easy to clean

Stabilizing Matrix

Most suspension solutions keep the prosthesis from falling off. However, Iceross suspension stops any movement, makes a firm connection with the prosthetic limb and stops that bungee effect. The Stabilizing Matrix describes the unique fabric weave integrated into the end of Iceross prosthetic liners. This allows radial stretching (around the limb) but limits vertical stretching (pistoning).

Stabilizing Matrix benefits:

  • Increases stability
  • Enhances comfort
  • Reduces risk of tissue damage

The Iceross Wave feature

Iceross Wave feature

The Iceross Wave feature makes the liner easier to flex at the knee, allowing it to adapt more to the user's movements. Less resistance means that less energy is required to flex the knee.

The Wave feature is designed so that the material stretches effectively at the front and folds in a controlled way behind the knee, reducing vaso-constriction and positively influencing blood-circulation in this area.

Active Skin Care

Aloe Vera is an essential part of Iceross Active Scin Care

Aloe Vera is known for its
healing qualities

Healthy skin is essential for mobility and comfort. Active Skin Care is the special blend of Aloe Vera and Vaseline® in second generation Iceross liners, which helps to maintain healthy, strong skin.

Menthol is another of our active skin care ingredients, offering the added benefit of a plesant, fresh smell. The Japanese have been enjoying its properties for over 2000 years. Widely used to relieve minor irritations, menthol has a cooling and calming effect on the skin.

Active Skin Care benefits:

  • Maintains natural moisture balance
  • Soothes dry and damaged skin
  • Reduces skin irritation

Size-Specific Umbrella

The Iceross 'umbrella' is the rigid circular component at the end of the prosthetic liner. If it's too small, suspension forces will squeeze the soft tissues there. Many other liners only have one size of umbrella, but Iceross offers the patented Size-Specific Umbrella, that matches closely the end of the residual limb.

Size-Specific Umbrella benefits:

  • Prevents unnecessary distortion
  • Improves suspension
  • Increases comfort

Scientific research on prosthetic liners

The Iceross suspension system performed best in both clinical and technical tests It has shown to be the most consistently performing suspension system in clinical use

Evaluation of transtibial suspension systems: Monash University, 1998

The suspension and stability of a TSB prosthesis with an Iceross® silicone socket has been shown to be superior to existing techniques
Suspension effect and dynamic evaluation of the total surface bearing (TSB) transtibial prothesis: Narita H et al, 1997

Users of the Iceross noted improvements in socket comfort, suspension and increased function. Previously difficult suspension and pressure problems were considerably remedied.
Experiences with respect to transtibial prostheses: Cluitmans J, 1994

Last word

After I started using Iceross Transfemoral, I realized that my old liner was too thick and soft for my above-knee prosthesis. Now I feel very secure and comfortable, I like the improved sensation and I really feel where my foot is when I'm walking.

Rev. Peter Thorarinsson, Iceross® Transfemoral user

The liner itself is the nearest I can imagine to skin to skin contact, and when the (prosthetic) limb is in place it becomes part of a whole which feels almost natural.
Colin Johnson, Iceross® user
