Prosthetics

Bionic Technology by Ossur

This is only the beginning

Ossur views the bionic prosthetic limb as an advanced device which utilizes intelligent structures - a synthesis of mechanical and electronic components - which perform functions as an integrated extension of their user.

The device must accurately reproduce the biomechanical functions that have been lost due to amputation. Utilization of sensors, microprocessors, software, artificial intelligence, and electromechanical actuators assist in restoring normal sensory and motor control functions to the amputee. The result is a replication of physiological function that is natural, reliable, comfortable and optimized for the individual.

Ossur Power Knee

The POWER KNEE

With the introduction of the RHEO KNEE? and the forthcoming POWER KNEE? we are pioneering the first and second step respectively in the evolution of bionic prostheses. The RHEO KNEE differentiates itself from established prosthetic knee systems through the incorporation of Artificial Intelligence. The POWER KNEE is the first prosthetic solution to combine a similar type of AI with a power source.

Bionics

The term Bionic describes the application of biological principles to the study and design of engineering systems, especially electronic systems - Bi(o) + (electr)onics.

Applied to the field of Prosthetics and Orthotics, the description is specified as the integration of electronic and/or mechanical components, defined as smart structures, intended to replace or enhance anatomical structures or human physiological processes.

The expression Artificial Intelligence (AI) is used when a computer, or other machine, is able to adjust its actions in response to varying situations and past experience - a device that can acquire and apply knowledge.

Smart structures contain sensors, actuators and artificial intelligence. They can respond in a human-like way to counteract loads, reduce vibration, change shape and prevent their own degradation. The application of smart structures to the field of prosthetics is providing new opportunities in the replacement of physiological requirements.
