Patellar Pain

What is patellar/knee cap pain

Patellar pain, or pain in the knee cap, can be triggered by a number of pathologies, many resulting from overuse and are treatable with knee sleeves or braces. It is important that people presenting with symptoms at the knee, see their health care practitioner so that a history can be gathered and a thorough physical examination can be conducted.

What are common causes of patellar pain that can be helped by our braces?

  1. Classified as an overuse injury, Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome (PFPS)can lead to damage of the articular cartilage beneath the patella, which can result from maltracking of the patella. Pain resulting from PFPS can additionally presents when biomechanical changes occur in the leg.

  2. Also related to improper tracking, Chondromalacia can be defined as the softening and degeneration of the articular cartilage beneath the patella, and is another common cause of patellar pain.  Pain is generally experienced beneath the kneecap, and can localize to the side with the most wear.

  3. Common in jumping sports, Patellar Tendonitis (Jumper's knee) can cause pain at the inferior and superior poles of the patella.  Repetitive load placed on the tendon can cause breakdown of collagen in the tendon, thus compromising the shock absorbing capacity of the limb.

  4. Patellar subluxation and Dislocation of the patella can have long term ramifications, pertaining primarily to stability and correct tracking of the patella.  In conjunction with physiotherapy, bracing can work well as well to provide proper tracking of the kneecap and provide more support.
