Össur donates products to relief effort in Haiti

Össur, a global leader in non-invasive orthopaedics, announced today that in an effort to contribute to the relief efforts in Haiti, the Company will be donating orthopaedic products to help those in need. Össur will coordinate all product donations through Project Medishare (http://www.projectmedishare.org/ ) and the American Orthotic and Prosthetic Association (http://www.aopanet.org/). Project Medishare is one of a small number of organizations that has direct access to Port-au-Prince airport and medical personnel treating the injured. Össur will be donating products that medical personnel now working in Haiti have specifically identified as critical to aid the injured. Those products include orthopaedic braces and supports as well as prosthetics for the many survivors who have suffered amputations.

“The tragic events in Haiti have left no one untouched. We have a responsibility as an orthopaedic organization to donate products to support the urgent need on the ground in Haiti,” said Jon Sigurdsson, Össur’s President and CEO.

Project Medishare for Haiti, Inc. was founded by Dr. Barth Green and Dr. Arthur Fournier in 1994. They assembled the first team of faculty from the University of Miami Schools of Medicine and Nursing to assess the healthcare situation in Haiti and explore ways in which they could help improve the health conditions of the people in Haiti. Project Medishare is on the ground in Port-au-Prince providing medical relief to the earthquake victims.

The AOPA Board of Directors announced recently that AOPA will help coordinate offers of assistance and aid to amputee patients in Haiti. This support will occur on multiple levels, including serving as a clearinghouse that will connect Haiti-based prosthetic patients with volunteer professional services and prostheses.
